Day 1 (22/7): Sapporo – Furano

Day 2 (23/7): Furano – Farm Tomita – eat lavender soft-serve ice cream. Stay at Furano

In 2008, Farm Tomita opened a second farm, Lavender East to the public. Located about four kilometers east of Farm Tomita, Lavender East has by far the most spacious of all lavender fields in Furano, covering 14 hectares. Besides a shop, cafe and observation deck, the farm offers paid 15 minute rides on the “Lavender Bus” through the lavender fields.

Another popular farm for lavender and other flowers is the Flower Land Kamifurano. The farm’s hillside location affords beautiful views of the Tokachi mountain range in combination with the flower fields. Among the attractions are rides through the fields on tractor pulled carts and hands on experiences such as lavender cutting and flower pressing.

An attractive way to travel between FuranoBiei and some of the lavender farms while enjoying the scenery, is the Furano-Biei Norokko train. The train operates on weekends from early June through late September and daily from late June through mid August, and stops at the temporarily constructed Lavender-Batake Station, a five minute walk from Farm Tomita.

Farm Tomita

From early June to late September, some trains along the JR Furano Line, including the Furano-Biei Norokko trains, stop at the seasonally constructed “Lavender Batake Station” (20 minutes, 230 yen from Furano or 35 minutes, 450 yen from Biei), from where the farm can be reached in a 5-10 minute walk.

During some days in summer, the Furano Kururu Bus connects Furano Station with Farm Tomita three times per day in the mornings only (20-25 minutes, 1500 or 2000 yen for a day pass depending on weekday). Alternatively, Farm Tomita is also served by some of the Round Trip Bus Tours sightseeing buses from Furano.

Outside of summer, access by public transportation in non-existent.

Farm Tomita – Lavender East

Lavender East is located about four kilometers east of Farm Tomita, about an hour’s walk or a 5-10 minute car ride away. Access by public transportation is not provided.

Flower Land Kamifurano

Flower Land Kamifurano is located three kilometers uphill, a five minute taxi ride or about a 50-60 minute walk from Kamifurano Station (20 minutes, 360 yen from Furano or Biei).

For lunch, consider heading to the Yuigadokuson for its famous black curry omelette

Next, board the Norokko Train, a mine-cart style train that’s only in service from June to October! As the train moves slowly across the countryside, you’ll be treated to picturesque views of the beautiful flower farms, grassy rolling hills and patches of golden rice fields.

Hokkaido: Farm Tomita (ファーム富田) is known as the largest lavender field in Japan, which attracts millions of visitors every summer. The farm has several fields with various kinds of flowers which start blooming from early May to mid October. But if you want to see the famous lavender field, the best time to visit there is in July.

Access: 7 mins walk from Lavender Field station

Hours: 8:30~17:00
Best time to visit: early to mid July

Day 3 (24/7): Biei – Shikisai Hill or Shikisai no Oka (色彩の丘). Stay at Sapporo

Also during the summer the Furano-Biei Norokko, a special train for tourists, operates along the Furano Line. In 2017, there are three round trips per day on weekends and national holidays from June 10 to September 24 and daily from June 24 to August 20. The train carries nostalgic cars with wide windows and unreserved and reserved seats. Seat reservations cost a 520 yen supplement, but are free for JR pass holders.

Sightseeing buses are numerous around Furano, but a lot of them run only in summer and do not target foreign tourists. Relatively easy to use by foreigners are the following three tourist buses that run during the summer months. They make scheduled stops at popular sightseeing spots, but do not provide tour guides:

  • Biei View Bus (June 12 to October 9, 2017 and some additional days in May and June)Starting and ending at Biei Station, these buses run along two main course around Biei once or twice per day: one visits the Patchwork Road, while the other visits the Panorama Road and the Blue Pond. The tours take 80-190 minutes and cost 2000 yen. Reservations can be made at major JR stations in Hokkaido until two days in advance or at the tourist information office in front of Biei Station until shortly before departure, as long as vacant seats are available.
  • Round Trip Bus Tours (June 24 to August 20, 2017 and some additional days in June and August)Starting and ending in Furano, these buses run along three main course around Furano once per day, with two also visiting Biei (with the option to disjoin the tour in Biei). The tours last 4-7 hours and cost 3000 to 5000 yen. Reservations are possible at major JR stations in Hokkaido (until two days in advance), via the internet (until one day in advance) or at the tourist information office in front of Furano Station (until just before departure), as long as vacant seats are available.
  • Furano Kururu Bus (July 3 to August 15, 2017)These tourist loop buses connect Furano Station with some of the sights around town; however, service is infrequent, and the timetables and fares are complicated; for example, some stops are only served on selected weekdays. A day pass for unlimited rides costs 1500 yen or 2000 yen depending on the weekday.

Blue Pond

The Blue Pond is located along Prefectural Road number 966, which connects central Biei with Tokachidake Onsen via Shirogane Onsen. A free parking lot is located next to the road from where the pond can be reached in a 5-10 minute walk.

Buses between Biei Station and Shirogane Onsen stop at Shirogane Aoiike Iriguchi (白金青い池入口) bus stop along the way. The one way ride from Biei Station to the pond takes 20 minutes and costs 540 yen one way. There are only five round trips per day.

In summer, the blue pond also gets visited by some Biei View Bus and Round Trip Bus sightseeing buses which depart from Biei and Furano stations respectively.

Shikisai-no-Oka is the largest panoramic flower garden in Hokkaido. The breathtaking rainbow of colourful flowers set against a backdrop of dramatic mountains makes for a pretty spectacular view. Truly a flower paradise!

Access: 25 mins walk from JR Bibaushi station

Fee: 200 yen
Hours: 9:00~17:00 (depends on months)
Best time to visit: July

And here’s the best part about Shikisai-no-Oka: there is an alpaca farm! This is your chance to finally get up close and personal with these adorable creatures.

Next, it’s time to rent a bike and cruise through the famous Patchwork Road! Don’t be fooled by the name, it is not a particular road! It actually refers to a scenic area with gorgeous rural landscapes and farmlands. The squares of the different crop fields make the area look like a patchwork!

While exploring the Patchwork Road, feel free to stop by Zerubu Hill, another splendid flower farm. Other than lavender flowers, there are also sunflowers, marigolds, geraniums and many other blooms! Be sure to head up to the observatory for a stunning view of the entire scenic area and try to spot the famous Ken and Mary Tree.

Day 4 (25/7): Otaru. Stay at Sapporo

It’s time to explore the cities! Otaru, a small harbour city facing the Ishikari Bay, is full of whimsical charms. When in Otaru, it is a must to check out the preserved Otaru Canal. Lined with warehouses, the canal used to play a part in Otaru’s role as a busy port. Now, most of these warehouses have been turned into museums and restaurants.

If you’re hungry, then head to Denuki Koji, a food alley right beside the canal. From upscale sushi restaurants to homely takoyaki stalls, there is a wide variety of eateries for you to choose from! My personal favourite is the fried chicken from Wakadori Jidai Naruto Honten.

After you’re done stuffing yourself with food, take a walk down the beautiful Sakaimachi Street towards the Marchen Square. A preserved merchant street in Otaru, Sakaimachi Street is home to a wide selection of glassworks shops, historic buildings, museums and gift shops. Most of the shops close at 5pm, so you better not lose track of time!

How to get there: There are multiple trains per hour between Sapporo and Otaru along the JR Hakodate Main Line. The one way trip costs 640 yen and takes 30 minutes by rapid train or 45 minutes by local train. About two trains per hour continue on to New Chitose Airport (70 minutes, 1780 yen one way).

Apart from a regular city bus network, there are four Otaru Stroller’s tourist buses, which connect Otaru Station with all of the city’s tourist attractions. The buses run typically every 30 minutes around the city center and once per hour in the less central areas. The fare on both tourist and regular buses is a flat 220 yen per ride or 750 yen for a one-day pass that is valid on one calendar day.

Day 5+6 (26 – 27/7): Lake Toya. Stay here

Next stop: Lake Toya! Part of the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, Lake Toya is a volcanic caldera lake that is bound to mesmerise you. Just look at how blue the water is!

Remember to set your alarms for 8.45pm, because there will be fireworks every night from April to October. Lasting for a total of 20 minutes, these vibrant fireworks will light up the skies above Lake Toya. Just look out of your room window, or wrap yourselves in yukatas (provided by the hotel) and head out to enjoy a glorious view of the fireworks!

How to get there:

By train

All limited express trains between Sapporo and Hakodate stop at Toya Station along the way. The one way trip from Sapporo takes roughly 100 minutes and costs 5400 yen by non-reserved seat or around 5920 yen by reserved seat. The trip is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass and Hokkaido Rail Pass.

From Toya Station, Lake Toya (Toyako Onsen bus terminal) is reached in a 15 minute bus ride (330 yen, about one bus per hour). The buses are operated by Donan Bus and are not covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

By bus

Donan Bus operates seven round trips per day between Sapporo Station and Toyako Onsen via Jozankei Onsen. The one way trip takes about 2.5 hours and costs 2780 yen.

Day 7 (28/7): Hokuryu Sunflower Festival

Considered as the largest sunflower field with around 1.5 million sunflowers, Himawari no Sato (ひまわりの里) in Hokuryu (北竜町), Hokkaido (北海道) also hosts its own sunflower festival annually. This year’s festival is scheduled for July 15 to August 20, 2017. Visitors can enjoy the sunflower maze, fireworks display, and other events during the festival.

Access to Himawari no Sato is a 40-minute bus ride through the Hokkaido Chuo Bus (北海道中央バス) bound for the JR Takikawa Station (滝川駅). Get off at Hokuryu Chugakko Mae (北竜中学校) and take a 3-minute walk towards the field.

Day 8 (29/7): Sapporo

Maruyama park – Hokkaido Shrine

Head to Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade, the oldest shopping area in Sapporo. With around 200 shops for you to choose from, you’ll be quite literally spoilt for choice!

Day 9 (30/7): back to SG

Sunflowers are the symbol of Hokkaido’s summer. Hokuryu Town Sunflower Field (北竜町ひまわりの里) is a well-known sunflower field located in Hokuryu town, which is approx 100 km north of Sapporo city. There are over 1.5 million sunflowers in the vast filed of 23.1ha and visitors can enjoy the magnificent view of golden field. The festival is held annually from mid July to mid August.
